If Rest Feels Hard, Your Values Can be a Clue to the Reason
For some people, rest is not easy. It can bring up feelings of discomfort, guilt, or a sense of falling behind. Even when you know you need to slow down, something pushes you to keep going.
That something is often a value, and it might be trying to protect something important.
The Values Behind the Urge to Push
We’ve found values like Ambition, Determination, and Personal Responsibility are common drivers for people who find rest difficult. These values shape work ethic, perseverance, and a deep sense of commitment. They are not the problem. In fact, they are part of what makes you reliable and effective.
But when some of your values dominate without support from other values, they can override your need for recovery. Rest starts to feel wasteful or unearned. You begin to see slowing down as a threat to your progress, rather than a part of it.
This is not just about mindset. It is about values alignment.
Alignment Brings Permission
When your values are in alignment, your actions feel more natural and less forced. That includes rest. But you can find yourself unaligned when one value begins to drown out the rest, even if everything looks fine on the surface.
You might still hit deadlines, check tasks off your list, and meet expectations. But internally, something feels off. You feel disconnected or tired in a way that sleep alone cannot fix.
The solution is not to abandon the values that drive you. It is to reconnect with the values that restore you.
Health & Well-Being. Belonging. Happiness. Experiences. These are just as legitimate as Ambition, Determination, Personal Responsibility, and other values pushing you to keep going. And they need space to show up, too.
Rest Is a Reflection of Your Values
Real rest is not about stopping everything. It is about making intentional choices that support what matters most. That might look like taking a walk instead of jumping into the next project. It might mean setting clearer boundaries around your time. It could be as simple as pausing to ask yourself: What value am I aligning by choosing rest today?
When rest aligns with your values, it becomes easier to accept. It stops feeling like a distraction and starts feeling like part of the work.
You can rest without guilt when you know it is a decision grounded in what matters to you.
A Question to Guide You
If you find rest difficult, try asking yourself this: Am I over-prioritizing a value like Ambition? And if so, which of my other values has not had a chance to lead?
That question will not solve everything, but it can bring clarity. And from there, you can begin to make choices that support a more sustainable version of the life you want to live.
Because the goal doesn’t need to be to do less. The goal is to stay aligned with what matters most.
