How to Stay True to Yourself During Times of Transition. A Practical Guide.
Change is happening.
Maybe you chose it. Maybe it arrived without warning.
Either way, things are shifting, and you're not quite sure what comes next.
Transitions can make you question everything. Your role, your routine, even your identity. It can be easy to lose your footing or feel like you're being pulled in too many directions.
But this is exactly when your values matter most.
They are your anchor, even when everything else feels uncertain.
Here’s how to use your Values Identifier report to stay grounded through change:
Step 1: Reconnect with Your Values
Start by opening your Values Identifier report.
Look through your list of personal values, and ask yourself: Which of these do I need to stay connected to right now?
You might find that one or two values feel especially relevant to the change you are navigating. Your report includes in-depth definitions, wants, needs, and expectations for each value. Let those details guide you. They were built from your responses, and they reflect the way you uniquely experience what matters most.
This step is not about solving the transition. It’s about remembering what is steady inside you.
Step 2: Pay Attention to What Your Values Are Asking For
Transitions often come with emotional friction. Excitement, fear, confusion, hope. Your values can help you sort through those feelings and figure out what you need.
Go to the "You Want, You Need, You Expect" sections for your top values.
Ask:
- What does this value need from me right now?
- What boundaries, practices, or support would help me protect it?
For example:
- If Belonging is one of your top values, a change in environment might leave you feeling adrift.
- If Health & Well-Being is a key driver, you might need to protect routines that help you feel balanced.
- If Independence shows up strongly, you might need to create space for making your own choices in this transition.
These are not abstract ideas. They are signals to help you stay connected to who you are while everything else shifts.
Step 3: Let Your Values Guide Your Next Few Steps
You do not have to figure out everything at once.
But you can start by making one or two decisions that reflect your values.
Choose a step that protects something important to you.
That might mean saying “no” to something that pulls you off track.
It might mean choosing rest, clarity, or space over rushing to the next thing.
It might mean sharing what you are going through with someone who can support your values, not just your goals.
This process is not about control. It is about alignment.
And even one aligned choice can shift how you move through change.
Step 4: Stay in Conversation with Yourself
Change does not happen in a straight line.
There will be moments when things settle and moments when they unravel.
Return to your Values Identifier report as often as you need to.
Reread the definitions. Reflect on the blind spots.
Remind yourself that staying true to yourself is not about staying the same.
It is about moving forward without leaving behind what matters most.
A Question to Reflect On
Which of your values feels most important to protect as things around you begin to shift?
